Procrastination at its finest

Titans Game

Since I last wrote, I’ve actually been quite busy. I'm still working, I've finished all my group projects, but I still have a TON of individual reports and an exam. I also went to my first “footy” game (you’re thinking soccer aren’t you, but it was actually a rugby game). Those of you who know me, know that I’m not the biggest sports person in the world, but I actually had a great time. Elise’s dad had extra tickets and gave us each one. When we got there I was introduced to another Canadian lady from BC who’s doing a teaching exchange at Elise’s dad’s school. On another note, I work with a guy from Canada, and not only Canada, PEI!! I’m telling you, it’s like Canada is invading Australia.

Speaking of Canadians invading Australia, Colton is here visiting. Currently he is off on a weeklong surfing excursion. Does he know how to surf? No. Is he excited? Yes. As Elise put it, there have been 3 shark attacks on the coast already in the last while, so he should be fine…I’ll update you next time.

So the dynamic trio of Colton, Alex and Emma was reunited for the first time since we graduated last May. We spent the first day eating pasta and lazing around my house. Too stubborn to sleep, but to tired to do anything. Because of my hectic work and school schedule Colton found his own way around the coast his first week here. I did however make time to spend the weekend with him and Emma. True to the origins of our friendship, we had decided to go on a wine tour on the Saturday. But let’s start the story with the tales of Elise’s 19th birthday the night before…

Side note: drinking age in Australia is 18 so it wasn’t a super important birthday, but that didn’t stop us from partying like our lives depended on it.

The theme: Op Shop. The attire: The ugliest outfit you could find. The outcome: hilarity on all fronts. The evening started out tame, but after a round of king’s cup and the second rush of people it was a night for the records. I think I’ve told you that I introduced flip cup to Elise and her friends here, well I’m officially joining their team from now on; team StFX let me down that night. Yes, Colton and Emma are being replaced. Elise even asked them to hand over their x rings. Other events of the evening will not be disclosed here. But we ended the evening with a trip to Macca’s.

I promised myself I would have fun, but be in good condition for the next morning’s wine tour, I even played flip cup with water. Well, the next morning we woke in a scene from the Hangover. I actually expected to see a tiger on my way to the shower. Despite how uneasy I felt about a ride on the bus or the winding road up to Tamborine Mountain, I needed to get out of the house. The sensory memories from the night were too much to handle. So Colton, Emma and I made our way to Helensvale on the bus.  Thankfully we got there early enough for a coffee for the two of them and a rest period for me before we piled into the shuttle to head up the mountain.

Walking the skywalk
That was one of the worst drives to do for my head at that moment – second only to the Barrachois Mountain. It was so worth it. When we got to the top we hopped off the shuttle and on to a trolley, which took us all around the mountain. We started at the skywalk and went exploring the rainforest area of the mountain. After the skywalk we drove around and saw all the sites – it is the cutest town of about 7000 residents. Being lunchtime, we thought it appropriate to stop at the cheese factory and brewery. Not willing to give in to my awful feeling, I split some crackers and cheese with Emma and got myself the beer tasting tray; four different beers ranging from light to dark. Well, I proved dad’s theory right. Crack a beer the morning after and you’re good to go.

At the end of the skywalk platform
Enjoying the rest of the afternoon headache free, we did some touristy shopping and partook in a rum tasting and two wine tastings. Taking after my father again, I came home with two bottles – a bottle of chardonnay with a hint of honey and a chocolate and coffee port. Friends and family, I have decided to bring this bottle of port home to share with you. It will make an excellent addition to our classic shooter. So yes, this is me enticing you to a “home coming” party of sorts sometime in November, with a bottle of port. Details to come.

Tamborine Mountain

Exciting adventures in the future, well I have a week to finishes three final reports, my own birthday celebrations and Maura Casey arrives in 8 days! We’ve started planning our travels around the pacific and currently are going from the coast to Canberra for Shari and Matt’s engagement party, to Tasmania to see the devils then to New Zealand to drive on the other side of the road for two weeks or so. The rest is still unplanned.

Seeing as I’m at work, and feeling slightly guilty for being paid to keep my friends and family updated, I’ll say that’s all for today.

Until next time,

Alex
